Joan Cox (born 1969) is a painter in Baltimore. Her paintings and works on paper center the intimate lives of lesbian couples.
She won Second Place in the 2025 International Women United Art Prize. Recent solo exhibitions include Sapphic Gaze at IA&A Hillyer Gallery in Washington, DC, and Side by Side at Towson University. For Pride 2026, two of her paintings were wrapped onto Baltimore city buses.
She holds a BFA from Towson University and an MFA from Massachusetts College of Art, through its program at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown.

Artist statement
My paintings center the lives of lesbian couples through scenes of intimacy, rest, and connection. I draw from my own relationships and queer community, placing these figures in interiors, gardens, and historic compositions that have long framed heterosexual desire. By inhabiting those visual traditions with queer bodies and gestures, the work gently shifts what viewers may assume is “normal.” Small details—hands brushing, shared weight on a couch, quiet kisses—accrue into a larger insistence that queer love is continuous, domestic, and intergenerational. These narratives invite recognition rather than othering, affirming queer life as fully present in everyday culture.
