Mitchell Craig was born in Washington Heights and has lived in Manhattan all his life. He studied at the High School of Music and Art and at Parsons, and spent his career in fashion and design before turning to painting.
He paints in oil on linen. DECADES is his project on how advertising pictured women across the last century. Sweater Girls, Pajama Game and Travelogue are series within it.

Artist statement
Mitchell Craig comes to his work after a career in design. His paintings delve into many of the same themes that shaped his design work- the power of beauty, the meaning of style and the way power, beauty and style are intertwined to tell stories. This new body of work grew out of an interest in the evolving depictions of women throughout the last century as they gained increased agency and freedoms. Extensive research and image gathering- decade by decade- led to a fascination with the ways that those new images of women- most often still shaped by men- were used to sell products….from tampons to toilet paper. Working only with images pulled from advertising- but released from that context- the new paintings seek to celebrate women beyond the stereotypes that have been imposed upon them.
